Two Step is a versatile social dance suited to contemporary ballads, soft rock love songs and slower rhythm & blues grooves. It has a smooth, continuous and romantic feel which makes it very popular as a wedding dance.
The “Two Step” was created in the 1960’s to provide a dance suitable for popular slow romantic ballads, by a 15 year old from Illinois named Buddy Schwimmer. Buddy was doing a line dance called “Surfer Stomp” which was based on two steps and a stomp. This worked well with fast music, but the footwork was too slow for medium and slow tempo songs. The timing was changed and it went from a line dance to a partnership dance called “Two Step”.
Two Step started to gain significant popularity in the 1980’s and has continued to grow since. It is now popular across America and the Firefly Dance Club is among the first to bring it to Australia.
The “Two Step”, like all dances has gone through changes over time. It has evolved into two different feeling dances. The Ballroom Two Step is very gliding, continuous, strong and powerful with a big sweeping feeling. It is precise and quite technical. Night Club Two Step is quite compact and has a more casual relaxed feeling.
Songs such as “Lady In Red” by Chris de Burgh and “Halo” by Beyonce are excellent Two Step examples.
Two Step can be learned at Firefly in private lessons and group classes. We often team it with Hustle in an 8 week series Group Class. It is introduced first in the casual Dance Sampler class.
