This class is an excellent way to be introduced to the International Latin & Ballroom (Standard) dances.
The dance styles which are included in International Ballroom (Standard) are Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep. These dances are characterised by anti-clockwise movement around the dance floor and the dancers remaining in closed dance position throughout.
The dances which are included in International Latin are Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive, Samba and Paso Doble. These dances (except Paso Doble which has its origins in Europe) are all derived from the original Latin American versions but have become highly modified, stylised and codified.
The International Latin & Ballroom (Standard) dances are taught using a sequence of patterns (routine) determined by the teacher, which gives the dancer the opportunity to focus on the foot positions, footwork and timing initially and build the leading and following skills later. The “routines” may differ from class to class and student to student, but the patterns are universally known, allowing students to dance with different partners. The figures in all the above dances are standardised and categorised into various levels for teaching, with internationally agreed vocabularies, techniques, rhythms and tempos.
The International Latin & Ballroom (Standard) Level 1 class will cover Waltz, Tango, Slow Rhythm (an essential preparation for Slow Foxtrot) and Quickstep. The Latin dances covered are Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba and Jive. Level 2 will introduce Slow Foxtrot and more advanced patterns and technique. Your teacher will advise you when you are ready to move to the next level. This class is structured in a way that allows time for review and practice – essential for remembering and being able to use what you have learnt.
